methane reformation

Will we ever achieve a "Hydrogen Economy" when it appears there is no truly
efficient method of deriving Hydrogen? Electrolysis whether based on KOH or
Boron or any other electrolyte for that matter is a terrific waste of
exergy. Consider the alternative proposed by petroleum interests namely
reforming natural gas to extract the Hydrogen. What is left over as a
by-product is carbon. It appears that this method is just as filthy as the
combustion of petrochemicals, we may as well stick with burning gasoline.
