If you reform natural gas (or partially oxidize heavier hydrocarbons) to
make hydrogen, you will make a vast amount of carbon dioxide. This can be
purified and sold as "food-grade CO2", but this doesn't take the CO2 out of
the atmosphere. In fact it just moves it from being emitted at one chemical
plant to being emitted from millions of pop cans and potato chip bags.
In fact, recovering CO2 this way is great if you have a use that will
sequester it - problem is there aren't a lot of options for sequestration.
