No reason to be overly pessimistic. The big three don't even LEASE totally
electric vehicles anymore. Using realistic numbers should be enough to
deter anyone from piling PV in the back of their electric pickup and
heading off to work.

'My' electric truck was never cleaning up the environment, but it sure was
a pleasure to drive and I got it for just $200/month (with the help of a
lot of other Ford drivers and tax payers, of course.) Battery powered
vehicles make more sense than hydrogen powered vehicles, but for portable
energy it's really hard to equal liquid hydrocarbons.

I really did measure just over 30 kWh for a full 70 mile charge. I also
charged the truck using a gas-powered generator. It took about 6 gallons.
The generator was probably between 15% and 20% efficient at converting
gasoline to electricity, so my measurements seem to agree.
