Why can't some fuel cells run in reverse?

Many of us are aware that hydrogen fuel cells can be run in reverse
mode (electrolysis of water).
Why then can't methanol fuel cells be also run in reverse? Can someone
present a strong thermodynamic argument?
What thermodynamic reasoning dictates whether a fuel cell/battery can
be run in reverse or not?
