- QUESTION:But hidden behind those proprietary catalysts and liquids, there is presumably consumption of energy. As a crude example, I could put sodium in strong hydrochloric acid and get a lot of (damp) hydrogen. But energy was consumed in making the acid and in extracting the sodium. Plain and simple, short of a perpetual motion machine, I know of no process that can extract hydrogen from a compound without more energy being consumed. Overall, the energy generated by the fuel cell or whatever will be less than the energy consumed in gathering and manufacturing those proprietary materials.,
