Here in New Zealand, wind power is just starting to take off. Currently
there is a modest 170MW capability, but there are two very large projects in
the planning stage. As we are almost out of Hydro power (and resource
consent processes make it difficult to build new schemes), wind power looks
like the medium-term option of choice.
We have the dubious advantage of being small islands in the middle of a very
large ocean, and of being close to the Roaring Forties. Generally we can
rely on wind more than a lot of places. For instance, the national average
load factor for current wind farms is greater than 45%, and the single
turbine installed as an experiment in Wellington in 1993 produces way above
this (Over 70% from memory, but I can't find a reference).
There is a lot more information on http://www.windenergy.org.nz/
Of course wind needs to be backed by other generation schemes. In our case
it is Hydro with some geothermal and oil generation. Fortunately our main
hydro schemes have very large storage lakes, so they complement wind power
quite nicely.

Ron

Perhaps or someone else can chime in.
Is wind a bust? If so, why?
