I agree, commercially available fuel cells are not efficient, compact
enough, or cheap enough for automobile use at this time. The
technology is progressing and investments are increasing.

I think you are correct that ICE's will be around for a long time and
will show substantial improvement.

The biggest threat to ICE that I see is a substantial improvement in
energy storage. If the ultracapacitor rumors hold true, they would
allow for the introduction of hybrids that don't cost more to own and
operate than standard vehicles. Once you are dealing with a car
running on electricity, it may be more economical to run it on a fuel
cell rather than ICE + generator.

I do not see the future as bleak and I expect it to be very
interesting.
