Dan, I am simply speculating -- but you have caught the heart of the
speculation. We now have "Big Government" because we have become so
much more productive over the last 100 years using cheap plentiful
energy...
I would say yes.
Long ago, Bob Dylan borrowed some words to sing that the times they
are a-changing, and those who were last will later be first. I would
bet that people in Bangladesh are not too worried about Peak Oil.
I don't know. How much food do they import? See Consumer Market half

If we keep our act together, (I don't mean retain the current
paradigm), we could do well enough. We have the most advanced farming infrastructure in the world and plenty of natural gas if used
primarily for fertilizer.
What we may have to learn to live without is what some call 'The car culture'.
That is extraordinarily unlikely to happen...
So, you are not into crunching numbers...
we need to develop transportation fuels that do not result in a net release of CO2...
You are kidding, right?
The inevitable higher cost for personal transportation will by itself tend to encourage more sensible development patterns.
What form do you see Bernanke's helicopters coming as?
