Er, so you could take advantage of a plentiful non-polluting resource
to power non-polluting vehicles? Seems a fairly good deal to me.
Let me get this straight. You want to harvest a diffuse energy source
(wind), to make a realatively small amount of high-grade energy
(electricty), to piss the majority of it away making a difficult to
handle,
lower grade of energy (hydrogen)? What part of that is the "fairly good
deal"?
Electricity has far better uses than making hydrogen!
- Hydrogen made from wind has lower environmental impact than just
about any other fuel now practical for a full-sized, full range
vehicle.
- Hydrogen from wind would be plentiful.
- Hydrogen from wind is, in the case of the United States,
domestically produced and does not have a significant geopolitical
downside.
- Hydrogen from wind does not compete for cropland and could
potentially be exported to countries with poor wind supplies.
- Hydrogen FCV's are non-polluting and in a decade or so will very
likely offer performance superior to that of current automobiles at a
comparable price.
- It seems highly likely that when extrinsic factors are taken into
account, hydrogen from wind will cost about the same as gasoline now
does on an MPG basis. When combined with coming plug-in hybrid
technology, the cost will likely be lower.
Are you aware of any other practical technology with equivalent
benefits? Methanol fuel cells aren't yet economically practical and
release CO2; the supply of biofuels is currently limited; large-scale
sequestration proposals and the technologies dependent on them don't
seem to be practical given that the CO2 would leak out again; and
economical full-sized, full-range battery powered vehicles don't exist
yet.

There seems to be an honest disagreement about the stage of methanol
fuel cells. I talked to one of the experts today and he told me that Samsung
and Toshiba have methanol fuel cells now (not expensive and underpowered,
I hope). He suggested I read a book, "Beyond gasoline and Oil", which is
by Olah, who got me interested in this subject.
The do claim that through the process you outlined previously, that they can
remove co2 also anc create a "______ neutral" fuel process. I'm not sure
if the blank is co2, greenhouse gas, or what.
I guess you've already said that if there is or when there is a viable
process
to convert hydrogen to methanol, you will jump on the bandwagon, since
methanol is more easily stored and transported ... yes?
