Cryogenic, superconducting conduits could be connected into a
"SuperGrid" that would simultaneously deliver electrical power and
hydrogen fuel

Just read that, and I confess that I couldn't make sense of the
economics. I mean, they say that losses on the conventional grid
average 10%. But two-thirds of the energy that flows through their
expensive buried superconducting grid is in the form of liquid
hydrogen, which they say is generated with about the same efficiency
as electricity. Wouldn't they waste more energy liquefying the
hydrogen than the conventional grid does to resistive losses? If so,
the supergrid would seem to make economic sense only to the
penetration needed to accommodate devices that must be fueled by
hydrogen, e.g., hydrogen FCV's, and only to the extent that the grid
loss savings less the cost of liquefying the hydrogen and the
additional cost of building and maintaining the grid are lower than
the cost of transporting the hydrogen through other means, such as
tankers, pipelines, or off-peak grid power with local electrolysis.
