Dreamer!
It's not free. The "cost" equals the energy used to produce, install,
maintain, repair and replace the panels. It all has to be paid for...
Agreed.
The point is, that every factual calculation I have seen shows that
there is a net loss in energy. -On average-, it costs more energy than it
produces. I wish it didn't.
There is hope, for solar power that is, that a good job can be done that makes the panel serve for a very long time.
So the energy to make new panels isn't free, making the energy they make
"not free". It's a cycle with a friction load. It must wind down.
Those statistics have yet to be published, let lone be determined.
If anyone has them, please share said statistics with us!
Until the energy cost of production decreases and the efficiency of the
panels increase, it doesn't seem to pay.
Agreed.
The othere factor - which establishes their value to date - is the location WHERE the electricity that a solar panel produces electricity. To produce it on the rooftop of a house that has commercial electricity already supplied is a waste of resources. But place that same solar pnel on your campsite in the boonies so that you can recharge your laptop, or run a cell phone, and you have created a very valuable service. To date, the latter is the factor that has made the solar panel so popular. We now see them powering freeway traffic moitoring cameras, etc. which makes good (engineering and economic) sense. In comparison, figure the resources needed to pipe 115vac out to the same said remote sites.
At this point, GMO fermentation of cellulose seems the best choice for
automobile fuel if you want to replace oil.
We await that day anxiously.
