Once again we have a largely US attitude to blame here.

Both BP and Shell have had no trouble diversifting into solar and
biofuels. They see themselves now as ENERGY companies not just OIL
companies.

Of course that's what their adverising says but it is mostly bull ***
now
isn't it?
Please tell us where you can buy Shell E85 and don't say Brazil or Iowa.

Small quantities of E85 are on sale now in the East Anglia region of
England
where they grow the sugar beet that going into the alcohol plants here.
It'll be
some time before it's available in larger quantities but some time soon.
Shell's
also working on biomass generated diesel.

The FACT of the matter is that Shell is doing it. It has no cultural
disinclination to get involved in technologies other than oil, wheras it
seems
US oil companies do have this problem.

Good for them if they are developing these things. There really is no choice
in the long run.

Well, I can't speak to England and Europe but I suspect the companies have a
little more incentive to be good corporate citizens than the Laissez Faire,
do what the hell you want, the public be damned, Capitalism of the US.
