Another possibility is explosive collapse of copper or something
similar - that is instead of using a magnetic field to accelerate the
plasma, waves can be collided off one another compressing a pipe with
an explosive is an example. One can imagine, knowing the math,
constructing a copperfoil coated hologram of expanded polystyrene
covered with a coat of plastic explosive and some sort of detonation
system - the detonator is the trick here. By controlling the phase of
it, despite the fixed nature of the hologram, the hologram could be
steered.
SO, one could take the far-field pattern desired - most hearts in most
chest cavities are in the same spot. Dial in the distance over some
range (a microwave diffraction grating set in front of the hologram
would tend to focus the far field pattern at a specific distance - its
like adjusting the focus on a telescope - could even be done
automatically) Line up the cross hairs with the approximate position
of the heart in the chest and fire...
This would be only a kilojoule or so - ALL the copper and ALL the
explosives amount to less than 100 milligrams across the entire
hologram. SO we're talking about a structured flash paper. And you
can have several rounds layered together like a...
book.
hmm..
Still - you'd have itchy skin in your chest, peeling skin like a
sunburn, any fabrics worn would be melted or burst into flame, things
behind you ditto, any personal electronics would be fried.. etc.,
etc.,
So, your story lacks credibility still, but not so much.
