than the oxygen sensor adjusts the amount of fuel entering your engine
accordingly. The wrong mix of gasoline and oxygen can increase
pollutants that exit your vehicle - thereby harming the environment --
as well as potentially causing your catalytic converter to fail or
even damage your engine. So, a properly working oxygen sensor is a
must for any vehicle....

All quite true. Replacement oxygen sensors for most vehicles are
available on eBay, and trivial to replace since they generally screw
in to some location on the exhaust manifold or exhaust pipe, with snap-
on electrical connectors.

The problem for the home mechanic is not replacement of the sensor,
but determininig how to establish that the oxygen sensor is the source
of an engine problem, and not one of the other 10 or so sensors in the
engine system. A simple engine code reader generally doesn't make
this distinction.

Any suggestions on how to distinguish if it an oxygen sensor or some
other sensor is the problem would be greatly appreciated by us home
mechanics who lack sophisticated, computer based, expensive diagnostic
equipment.
