Sorry for the OT post, but I've read so much America basing done on
this and other newsgroups by European residents, I thought if
appropriate to return the favor. There are others, but this old post
quite sufficiently conveys the message. I realize athat some of the US
critics were still sperm dripping down their mother's leg during WWII
when our fathers and elder brothers were being killed in some farmers
field of town in Europe, and in the Paciific Islands, or the Alaska
(wow, the people most loudly critical of the United States likely
never studied history, and don't even know that some of most extremely
bloody conflicts took place right here in the United States.
Evidently, young Europeans study wine and literature much more than
they study history. Americans equate this to ignorance. Mean right,
sure, but I'm tired of all the pissing an moaning. In truth, I have
yet to meet a European student under the age of 25 that realizes that
without the US intervention in WWII (in which the US had absolutely
nothing to gain), they today would all be speaking German (just like
the man below says). Likely the Chinese would today be a province of
Japan, were it not for the Americans. Digest that, because it's true.
In all honesty, only the Russians defended their nation effectively,
which says a great deal for the Russians IMHO. Of course anyone with
at least some education knows that it is not very bright to launch a
land attack on Moscow on the eve of a Russian winter. Evindently
Hitler evidently did not read about Napoleon's mistakes, but then
nobody viewed Hitler as much of a scholar. Still, Napoleon ended up
slightly better-off than Hitler, but only slightly.
Now the point of this post is to teach ignorant young Europeans that
you don't mess around with the Eagle or the Bear, because they are the
only players in the game that count for anything. I doub't that either
the US or Russia wants to dictate the fate of Europe or the middle
east, but if push comes to shove, future history has little doubt
about the eventual outcome. or about the resolve of the US or Russia
(past tense) to dictate that outcome. So, life with it as a fact.
We here in the US are live in very sensitive times, primarily because
of the loss of our productive economy as a result of "Globalization"
and for stupidity in allowing our industrial and agricultural job base
to be allowed to moved offshore. How to fix this problems is what
seems to perplex everyone, but even a freshman economics major know
the solution, but it is not politially attractive, and means
alienating some of our foreign friends. The solution is obvious to
anyone who thinks about the cause of the problem. (Now I an speaking
to US politicians.) You have unemployment when you have, as a nation
no productivity. (Sales of services and intellectual properties hurt
our national productivity base, and without productivity jobs simply
no longer exist.) Again, the long term solution is so obvious that a
freshman in college can provide the answer. I stoop to an analogy, to
tame a river and apply it to productive uses, you first build a dam.
Then you accumulate the energy in a central reservoir, like a mill
pond, and then gradually allow it to power the water wheels of
industry. First, you build a dam (which means protective tariffs on
imported products that were produced with worker paid 27-cent/
hour...this levels both the water and the playing field. Then you
flood manufacturing and agriculture with government funding as needed
(rather than wall street and banking.)
Next you rebuild our heavy industries like steel and heavy equipment
manufacturing with government financing. This in turn creates millions
of jobs in the steel, coal, and heavy equipment industries (when was
the last time that you saw an American made large backhoe, bulldozer,
or grader?). High-tech and cosumer products come next, because this
industry can employ more than a million workers. Prohibit intellectual
property selling and offshare manufacturing by firms that Intel, and
confine the production of American developed technologies to American
firms and American workers. (Reaize that most computer products are
now being manufactured in Asia, based on US developed technology,
hell, the microcomputer itself was developed at Intel, by the son of a
labe technician that once worked for me...Think I'm kidding, his -the
father's name- was Adrian Hoff who worked for Intel. In turn, Intel
licensed the patent rights to offshore firms. As a result, most of the
personally own computers today are products of firms called Toshiba,
Asus...and only a few produced by IBM, and other domestic
manufacturers.
Possibly I'm demented, but I don't think so. American capitalism has
been very successful in selling off the rights to American developed
technology to foreign buyers (as is promoted by the Harvard Business
school). I suppose this is called Globalization, and like NAFTA, are
being promoted by out current government leaders. The bottom line is
that well this may be good for well placed capitalists, it is
pernicious for Americans as a whole, particularly people who have to
be employed to pay their bills. The fact that some many people can no
longer pay their bills is the basis of the banking problem, but why
the government is bailling out wall street and the bankers is a total
mystery to me. The problem is so obvious, but the solution is
politically incorrect, at least so I am told.
I guess that although I am a physicist, somewhat gifted in soluton of
complet problems, it seems to me that few of our elected reps seem to
understand what the problem really is, yet alone to have a solution.
The real challenge is to jumpstart productive American industry, which
is where the jobs stem, and nobody wants to face this complex issue.
Damn, what a bunch of elected wimps!
Now the following is directed at our European critics. Take it for
what it is worth.

Andy, how old are you? I suspect that you were not even alive during
WWII, and have no clue as to what took place during that era.
Watch some of the old film footage showing the brother of your then
king partying with Hitler. You'll also find footage of the then prime
minister announcing that he had met with Mr. Hitler and secured "Peace
in our time".
Good grief my man, are you so poorly educated that you have never read
WWII history?
Now what you posted is not totally incorrect, but somewhat warped. If
you read any authoritative text on international politics, it will
tell you that the historic stance of the UK has been in a direction to
balance the power in Europe. England was on good terms with Germany,
until the power stucture in Europe suddently shifted resulting in
England shifting sides and becoming allies with France, who was
historically an enemy. At the time, nobody, the US, UK, or anyone else
was really concerned about Russia, because at that time Russia was
universally viewed as just another third rate toilet populated with
ignorant peasants. (Wow, if anything, WWII destroyed this image of
Russia.)
Quite honestly, the US watched the diplomatic position of England very
carefully, because it could topple in either direction. If it had
toppled in the wrong direction, my friend you would today be posting
in German. (This is a chapter in my texbook on International
Politics.) When Germany invaded France, the UK shuddered, realizing
what lie ahead for them since the balance of power had shifted.
Germany (Hitler) had long made advances to England, but to the Brit's
credit, they had resisted. In plain language, this pissed of Hitler,
so he decided that he could take England by force. Big mistake!!!!
(HItler made the same mistake with Russia.)
Seeing what was in the future for them, the Brits enclarged the RAF,
and quickly constructed the primitive Chain Home coastal defense radar
system that provided advance warning of German bombing attacks.
Fearing the worst, England sent their top radar expert (Sir Robert
Alexander Watson-Watt) to the US to work with RAYTHEON engineer Percy
L. Spencer to produce the first magnetron tube that could be
manufactured in quantity.
What precipatated the entry of the US into WWII is still highly
debated ever here in the US. A simple anwer is impossible to obtain,
but it had nothing to do with shipping, commerce or profits. I believe
it is more like the situation that brought the US into WWI. Until
that time, the US had largely stuck to the Monroe Doctrine (more or
less, because of what happened during the Spanish-American war.)
At the outset of WWII, the US simply sat back at watched the
developments as they unfolded. But...when England was at risk,
something in the genetic constuct of many Americans seem to to into
overdrive, just like Pearl Harbor. That seemed to hit a nerve,
although I was only a kid at the time, even I could pick up on this.
I remember my uncle (a pattern maker) coming home and dropping of his
toolbox at our house, then going to elist. The last words that I can
remember him saying were: "I may be gone for a while, so don't keep
dinner warm for me." That was the last time I saw him.
So, be careful of what stupid and ignorant crap that you post.
Otherwise some Brit or US dork may just decide to cut you a new one.
Since you appear to be a Brit, I will give you a simple challenge.
It's very simple. Go to the most scury, low-life bar that you can
locate in say Liverpool. Sit down at the bar to fortify yourself,
then loudly shout: "*** the USA and *** the Queen." My guess,
knowing more than a few Brits, is that your next memory will be that
of waking up in a hospital ward!
