Yes, small engines are inherantly less efficient than large engines,
this being a wall effect which goes like the square of dimension,
while the volume effect goes like the cube of dimension,
making the wall less significative as the size of engine increases.
This is also true for turbines.
However, engine efficiency also falls rapidely
if you reduces throtle and run a large engine near idle,
and this is even worst of the turbine engine...
Part of the problem is the hourly modulation of demand
which fortunatly cancel out on a large number of connected customers...

Generatiny your own power make sense only if you have
a stable and constant electrical demand like for industrial process,
where the engine heat can further be used...
