There is a common misconception here, that the energy balancing needs to be
done at source. In fact, the grid does itself act as an energy smoothing
device, because of its size and diversity of sources, so it can handle some
amount of variable inputs. In addition, there are a variety of technologies,
some commonplace some experimental, to allow very large commercial storage
devices to be attached to the grid to store temporary surpluses for release
at a later time. These can be self-contained commercial entities, buying
power off the grid at low prices and selling it back at peak times when
prices are
higher. But they can be located anywhere on the grid, not just at the power
source.
