Tethers

For some time I have heard speculation that payloads may be hoisted
into orbit by using tethers from the ground to large space stations.
Such tethers would have to have amazing tensile strength to weight
(mass) ratios.
Maybe nanotubes?
I have also read that nanotubes may be superconducting.
So... is there any possibilty that at some point power may be
transmitted to
earth from solar arrays via nanotube tethers (waveguides)?
Not completely down to earth...
