That says how efficient is the engine in converting chemical energy
to kinetic. But it does not help the driver know how far he can go on a
full tank of fuel. Which is one point of the number.

If you want that sort of efficiency measure, a ratio (%) of useful
energy
out would be even better.

Also, the fact remains you pay at the pump per gallon, not per
Megajoule.
So the number is even less useful for the driver.

A driver just wants to know how far he can go on a tank full of gas and
how much does the need to pay to reach place X.
