One of the advantages pivots have over ditch irrigation is the ability
to irrigate rough ground. There is no need to level the land to make the
water flow. They can probably irrigate almost all farmable ground
if the pivot spans are short enough.
There are plenty of examples of this up in the Nebraska Sandhills.

Agreed, a center pivot for irrigation works on rolling hills. I should have said that center pivot *plowing* is limited to flat fields. Plowing a contour with a center pivot is impractical.
