Bingo. We unfortunately do not have a full understanding of the
forces at work, our records are pitiful, and the geological
evidence is often ambiguous. In the case of the gigatons, yes
the evidence would be in isolation, because it required new
technology to record. But at least you can say for sure, that
during the period that the satellite was operating (since 1979??)
that the ice has increased.
