The price of fluro bulbs has come down alot in recent years. But they still cost alot compared to incandecent globes (eg $4 vs 40c). I calculated the payback to be 2 years per globe. The annoying thing is that every fluro bulb i've owned has failed in less than 2 years.
Last time I bought CFs they were less than $2 each at costco. They have a nice color and I think two out of ten have failed in over four years. Payback is about 500 hours. Most of my bulbs see 6 hours a day in the winter so break even occurs in about 3-4 months for me. (60 watt equivalent at $.08/kwh).
Best, Dan.
