If you read the NREL report, you'll see its not easy to get the 100-150
tons of biodiesel per hectare per year. They did manage that rate on a
few days, but the program was cut, probably because oil was so cheap.
Also, their best results were gained whilst pumping CO2 into the water.
That said, far less work has been done to breed algae and learn their
habits than just about any other crop. I'm sure a concerted program
could achieve good results.
The short answer though is that if we want significant amounts of bio
diessel (>10 million barrels per day) algae is the only answer.
