Could anything be cheaper than the metal foil they are using now? The
support structure is probably a more significant cost.
In most places the rental value of the land for even a few months is or
will soon be more valuable than any mirror farm. That's why future
housing developments should be designed around/under the mirrors.
The SE California desert is horrifyingly UGLY. Wind and mirror farms
make sense there but this won't be true for most places.
Even the piping and tanks for the molten salt would be more expensive
than the solar collector.
The real cost of the plant would be the same as any fossil fuel plant:
the steam turbine, boilers, generators, etc.
They should have been building these things decades ago. No great
breakthroughs in technology were required.
