You might try this question on the alt.engineering.electrical
newsgroup. Some of those guys have worked in the power generation
industry for years. There is this website:
http://www.howstuffworks.com It doesn't really go into technical
details, though. The article on electrical transmission wasn't written
by a professional apparently. It claims the two 120 volt lines going to
a US household are 180º out of phase.
