There are less iron losses in transformers and motors (proportionnal to
frequency square), less radiation from lines, less hum due to less ear
sensitivity...
But the choice for 50 or 60 hz was made rather arbitrarily, depending on
first firms producing current during the 19th century (such as Westinghouse
in north America or AEG in Germany).
There is no link of 50 hz with the metric system. Several other a posteriori
justifications of 60 hz from Bob Eldred are partisan claims.
