One of the frustrating things about these Google Groups is that people
seem to skim & miss points.
The point, Mr. Giuseppe, had nothing to do with the relative merits of
lead batteries or lithium batteries. The point was that European
governments are now getting so much money from taxation of oil that
they will work -- behind the scenes, to be sure -- to undermine any
technology, like Electric Vehicles, which would threaten their tax
revenues.
As for the idea that lithium is "quite better" -- a quick Google search
shows there are currently 10,000 cases of lithium toxicity in the US
alone. Lithium interfers with the Central Nervous System, leading to
collapse of the cardio-vascular system. Scary, heh?
In case you miss the point again, Mr. Giuseppe, let me state that, in
my worthless opinion, the health dangers of using lithium in Electric
Vehicles would be quite acceptable. Certainly, those health dangers
would be trivial compared to the risk to life & limb of actually
driving on European roads. But the extremists who got excited about
the supposed dangers of DDT, asbestos, lead paint, & silicone breast
implants would have lots to get excited about with lithium. It is a
known toxic element which persists in the environment indefinitely.
Replace lithium with any other heavy metal, and the story would be the
same. Those extremists could certainly make things difficult for
Electric Vehicle manufacturers -- especially if they are being quietly
encouraged by tax-hungry European governments.
