R. H. Allen pointed out:
It takes a *long* time -- as much as several days -- to
start up or shut down a nuclear or coal plant. As such, neither is much
good for peak power use.
other approach to handling the daily power demand cycle -- adjust theFrom a society-wide perspective, it may be worth thinking about the
load to a (high constant) power output, instead to adjusting the power
output to a varying load.
A couple of possible large power demand balancing loads -- water
desalination (e.g. for aquifer recharge); tar sand or oil shale
extraction. The plan would be to build some large "base load" type
nuclear power plants, and direct their power output between peak
electric demand and (say) water desalination as required.
