Actually, it is possible.
The losses are quite high - 50% or more.
But, with sufficiently cheap electricity, it can be made to work.
IIRC, this is the case in Norway, H2 from electrolysis is now cheaper
than imported gas.
H2 can be tankered around the planet, it's just annoyingly undense.
