Do hybrid cars use a motor/generator for braking so that the kinetic energy of motion is reclaimed when slowing down. Of course there is a backup friction brake, to prevent emergencies, but what fraction of the time does it kick in, wasting energy?

friction brakes are necessary in panic stops, and regular braking under 30mph.
