Our present hydro electric systems function at a dismal 15% efficiency.
Can anyone speculate why we are unable to improve that efficiency?
What if we could move up to 30% efficiency and double the output of the
Niagara Falls power vista, et al? Why not?
Why can't they build multi-level hydro turbines where the output from one
turbine feeds the input of another turbine a few feet lower. The water can
continue to fall into as many sluices as you have height for. Hoover could
have many levels as could Niagara. The Great Yangtze Dam should have used
this method.
Multiple small drops is less efficient and a lot costlier than one simple big drop.
There are 2.4 million dams in the US. If they were all had turbines that fit
their capacity no matter how small and were all tied to the grid, 99% of
the power would be free minus the overhead.
Which power ? All power used in the US ? Sorry. Hydro alone does not pull it.
