Anyone know BTUs/gallon for regular, midgrade, and hi test? Is there a
rule of thumb or an algorithm? Can it be computed from octane number?
My real question is do they adjust the blend to keep the BTUs/$ the
same as the price goes up? My $/mile actually goes down when I run
midgrade.. mileage goes up enough to overcome the increased cost... I'd
like to see a chart or graph... Anyone have a link?
Different octane rating gasoline all has about the same energy per gallon. The octane rating doesn't have anything to do with energy content. It is a measure of engine knock compared to pure 'octane'.
The higher octane gasoline is more expensive because it costs more to formulate it. Very few cars require octane above 87 for proper operation. Automobile mileage is hardly ever improved enough to justify buying the higher-priced 'hi-test'.
