Catagorizing opposition to nuclear power as leftist isn't quite a fair
way to put it; Support for nuclear power isn't a right wing meme, there
are plenty of leftists that support it as well. You can have whatever
political ideology you want and still see that nuclear power is a
winner.
In theory -- you are quite correct. Nuclear power would seem to offer
a whole lot to genuine left-wingers. It is the only practical power
source to provide the vast quantities of energy needed to lift the
billions of human beings in the Third World out of poverty. It is the
only practical option for dealing with alleged anthropogenic global
warming, given that solar power is not yet economic (outside niche
markets) and that TeraWatt-scale wind power would disrupt global
climate. And global nuclear power would provide a solid reason for the
kind of international oversight that left-wingers claim to love.
Then we look at reality. Patrick Moore, founder of Greenpeace, talked
about the benefits of nuclear power -- he is not welcome in the
organization he helped create. Prime Minister Tony Blair has been open
to discussion of nuclear power -- and that is just another of the many
reasons that his own left-wingers detest him. Hard to think of any
other prominent left-wingers that have been realistic about nuclear
power. Mostly, all the left-wingers offer is the same old uninformed
fear-mongering. Sad, unnecessary, & harmful -- but that's the way
things are.
