Hi, read this previous posting thread from years ago:
http://groups.google.com/group/sci.energy/browse_thread/thread/8f2f2e542c41445f/c11d6082d65fa828?lnk=st&q=&rnum=5&hl=en#c11d6082d65fa828
Also, read the physicsweb article linked inside that thread.
This phenomenon may have been seen before.

Could it be possible to radically accelerate the decay time of
radioactive waste?

Some researchers are now claiming this may be possible.
Comments?
Applications almost certainly wont be accelerating decay of radwaste
for disposal purposes; If we actually cared about stuff like that we'd
build molten chloride incinerator reactors to burn all the transuranics
from spent fuel before we started worrying about the fission products,
which are mostly in the 30 year half life range.
It might be interesting if they could make it work hot instead and use
it to turn 'on' a chunk of radwaste in some sense. I doubt it flies
though and likely ends up in the dustbin with the nuclear isomer decay
being forced by x-ray story we remember from a couple years ago.
