Dear members of the group,
Maybe someone could help my colleague with a question concerning
water-related implications of the eventual biofuels expansion. Any
replies please send directly to me, to Andrei.JOURAVLEV@xxxxxxxxx
Yours sincerely,
Andrei
1. Is the Brazilian experience of ethanol production from sugar cane
transferable to other Latin American countries, on water grounds?
2. From a water resource management persepctive, what are the actual
requirements of land for biofuel expansion (can one actually expect
severe water relative scarcity problems)? To what extent can one refer
to competition between food and energy crops? Are there water caveats
that one may need to bear in mind?
3. What is the virtual water content of a biofuel unit? What would be
the gains, in terms of water availability and quality, of further
technological improvements in feedstock selection and agroindustrial
processes?
4. Is there any must-read information source that may shed some light
on these issues besides publications on "virtual water" and the
Comprehensive Assessment on Water in Agriculture by CGIAR?
