In exactly what way ? I doubt you've thought this through and are just
parroting typical established myths.

Some of the newer trolley bus designs allow for independent
"off-wire" propulsion using fly-wheels, which seems like a more
flexible system.

Flywheels don't store enough energy and are inherently very dangerous.

The little Roman buses only have a range of 45 km at present using
zinc-air batteries, going up to 120 km with fuel-cell batteries that
are coming in soon.

They seemed to be used quite widely last time I was there a couple of
years ago.

What exactly is wrong with using lithium ion batteries ?

Rome has a lot of small electric buses too, operating on narrower
streets where these behemoths couldn't travel. I think they are
battery powered.

Which begs the question why do you need overhead wires ?

Range is the problem, as it is for all battery powered vehicles. Cost
too...

You only need independent power from the wire over very short
distances in a trolley bus.

Having a small capacity for independent propulsion means you don't
need to have ugly cross-over junctions at intersections.

Tried and tested technology - it works.- Hide quoted text -

Should read: You only need power *independent of the wire* over very
short distances in a trolley bus
