Hello,
I'm looking for good resources (online or hardcopy books) about steam
turbines and associated electric generators, not focusing too much on
the thermodynamics, but on the design and operational aspects (things
like what are the types of turbines, steam glands, speed control,
startup and shutdown, how do you synchronize the generator to the
network, etc...)
This is probably a FAQ on this group, but I can't seem to find the FAQ
either.
First, even if there was a FAQ, it likely would not cover this. Are your
questions academic? Or are you planning to implement the concepts? That
will make a difference.
I'm looking for "real world" knowledge. I'm working in a waste to
energy plant, and I need resources to understand the process and all
the vocabulary I hear everyday. There doesn't seem to be any in-house
documentation of that kind so I'm resorting to newsgroups which have
proved to be very efficient in my experience.
This is beyond my scope. There is a guy that sometimes comes along that goes by deastrom. He is very experienced and knows the physics.
I seem to get good google hits with:
waste stream steam turbine production
Do you guys plan on qualifying for net metering? Otherwise, the avoided cost rate will make it tough for an equitable installation, IMHO.
Synchronization will be done by the machinery. It is very rare to manually tie into the grid anymore. I would think the cost of autosync would pay for itself with one human mistake.
But it works by winding your source at a very slightly higher frequency to the grid. Indicators like lamps, (sensors in auto), will show when you are coming up to phase. When in phase you connect and apply more power to start pushing.
How big will the system be?

Best, Dan.
