I've been manually paralleling generator for years to the system using a
synch scope. Our GTs (we have 3 dsl powered 52 MW dsls) are all auto-
synch, but I sometimes put them in hand and do it manually for fun.

Auto-synch is good and works, generally, better than the human hand. They
have limiters on most synchs that prevent out-of-phase paralleling (which
would result in wiping the bearings of the turbine/ generator).

It sounds like a very bad thing to do electrically, but why the bearings?

Because the reason you see so many bearings lying
around machinery rooms is that when you
tie two 1MW generators together 10 degrees out of phase
with each other is that the first thing it does is blow all the ball
bearings
out of all your electric motors.
