Take a look at the math I posted; unlike trying to get people to Mars, this uses existing technology.
You find the deposits, drill holes into them, bring the oil and gas up, refine it, and distribute it.
Now, with $1,000 per capita petroleum profit in the U.S. (minimum) per annum, and a population of 300 million...we can spend up to $300 billion per year in inefficiency due to nationalizing it, and still break even.
That's no small potatoes, even given the inefficiency of a government bureaucracy.
