Microwave power transmission has been demonstrated on a pilot
scale, with mediocre efficiency (IIRC, the efficiency was 54%).
However, this efficiency could probably be improved by incremental
improvements in the microwave generator, antennas, and rectifiers.
The big problem with microwave power transmission over great
distances is the need for a space-based reflector, and the
large scale of the system, necessarily with aperatures at least
on the order of sqrt(distance * wavelength).
