It has nothing to do with American engineering schools; ours are some of
the best in the world. It has to do with American _business_ schools,
which teach that the road to profits is through cutting expenses, not
improving revenues or making better products.
Also, the few high-mileage cars available here simply don't sell well
because gas is too cheap to make the higher costs a net savings. It's
also impossible to get the really high-mileage cars on the market in the
US because they don't pass our safety regulations, which is largely due
to the need to survive getting hit by massive trucks that shouldn't be
on the road in the first place (and wouldn't, if they had to pay their
way).
Just why do you think the interstate was created? Have you no sense of
history?
