dwaltersMIA@xxxxxxxxx says...
Rolf is 100% correct: there a clear path to ramping up production and
we could go from 104 NPPs to 300 or more in 15 years very easily. It's
a question of *planning* something capitalism, especially US
capitalism is loathe to accept.
The politics of regulation stipulate a 4 yo 5 year *Review process*
which is quite insane. But...the results o the mass-anti-nuclear
movement of the 1970s. Time to overturn these regulations and stream
line it. As Rolf pointed out the silly and mostly unique US form of
one-of-a-kind NPP construction is over and has been for 10 years.
Plants can and are being built faster and cheaper and safer. The other
big hinderer is a material one: component manufacturing is way down.
There used to be half-a-dozen big forges in the US to produce the
giant stainless steel forgings necessary. Now, there is really only
one big one left in the whole world: Japan Steel Works. Smaller but
not quite big enough ones exist in Korea, Russia, China and France.
If the US planned now, with component factories reopened or built,
there simply is no reason why in 10 years we couldn't be up to 20 to
30 reactors a year being started. This is exactly how the French and
Russian built theirs, who the Chinese are building theres now. And all
could do it even better.
David
What we disagree about, David, is what the ruling reactionary cliques,
in particular the US ones, have been doing and will do now concerning
nuclear power plants - both in the USA, for instance, and in the world
as a whole.
In fact they're abandoning (civilian) nuclear energy, and have been
doing it more and more since over 30 years back.
So far, the "bold" nuclear-energy programme of the Bushies (from
early 2002) has caused the construction start of not one single
nuclear power reactor. If in fact they were to were to build a couple
of them in the USA itself later, this would not change that backwards
trend worldwide for which the ruling US cliques were and are the
main responsible forces.
The so-called "mass-anti-nuclear-energy movement" was caused by their
media propaganda too, from the late 1960s on turning massively "anti",
and was never any more than a fringe phenomenon either. They never
did succeed in fooling a majority of people here in Sweden for instance,
and most probably not in the USA either. Their anti-nuclear-energy
fanaticism showed up very clearly in that fantastic "referendum" here
in 1980 in which people were only allowed to vote "No" or else abstain.
Now they're going after the secondmost-modern energy sources too, with
the big "manmade global warming" fraud etc.
This phenomenon, energy's on purpose being made more and more expensive
instead of the other way around, is one clear sign of the bankruptcy of
the whole reigning capitalist/imperialist "order" in the world, as
I've pointed out several times earlier.
