Thanks Bill. My understanding is that, currently, hydrogen required
for fertilizers is derived from the same hydrocarbons. I guess getting
it thru a heat-assisted electolisis at nuclear plants could help.
You're right that corn-based ethanol production consumes pretty much
all the fuel it produces. But I think that hydrocarbon producion from
biomass (using Fischer-Tropsch process as one of the steps) yields
much more fuel than is consumed during the agricultural process,
provided that non-fossil fuel is used whenever possible (eg for drying
up the biomass).
