"Always" available? In my neighborhood, the sun goes down every
night. Round about the same time that folks get back from work and
start switching on lights, cookers, heaters, computers, ....
Even if solar were competitive today (which it is proven not to be),
it would still be useless as a replacement for fossil/nuclear until
cost-competitive large-scale energy storage is developed. But if that
kind of large-scale storage can be developed, then it would then be
more efficient to use the energy storage to let existing fossil/
nuclear plants run at a steady rate, using the stored energy to meet
fluctuating daily demand. That would destroy the market for new solar
generating capacity.
Until we hear European politicians talk about taxing "Big Sun", we can
rest assured that solar is still a dream.
