ERCOT said the grid's frequency dropped suddenly when wind....
production fell from more than 1,700 megawatts, before the event, to
300 MW when the emergency was declared.
At the time of the emergency, ERCOT demand increased from
31,200 MW to a peak of 35,612 MW, about half the total generating
capacity in the region, according to the agency's Web site.
So 1400MW of wind power suddenly disappeared (as wind tends to do here) and
it caused a stage 2 emergency in the most reliable power grid in North
America despite it being only about 2% of the total capacity.
What happens when the tree-huggers get their way and we've got 50%+ of our
capacity depending on the fickle winds? How many people are going to freeze
to death or suffer heat stroke because we'll be forced into rolling
blackouts or even cascading failures any time the wind stops blowing? How
much higher is ERCOT going to have to push their emergency reserves (costing
everyone money) to prevent that from happening due to the sudden
catastrophic generation losses that are inherent to wind? We're far better
off spending our money on new nukes that are safer, more reliable, and better for the environment.
