I couldn't agree more.

If someone can't express themselves concisely then it's rarely worth bothering
with.

Actually, you can buy the book Bob Zubrin wrote from which the long
quote is taken. It is called "Energy Victory."

I starts with a description of the disaster we face with Peak Oil, or
more especially OPEC oil. We (in the USA) ship 1 or 2 billion dollars
(10^9) PER DAY to people many of whom wish us ill.

Eh ?

The US is a net oil IMPORTER ! It seems the basic tenet of this case is flawed.

In any case, oil is a global commodity. It's simply not possible to say who gets
whose oil exactly EVER, especially after it's passed through the brokers' hands.

Cut the simplistic 'thinking'.

Read it again, Graham, slowly.

Ok, I misunderstood your phrasing.

Of course the US is a net oil importer. I said nothing to the
contrary.

Biofuels will be a useful adjunct but will never replace petroleum. At best I hear
estimates of them eventually providing maybe 10% of energy currently provided by oil.

The USA could achieve far better in a very short period by (a) using energy more
carefully - like not leaving cars idling when not in use and turning lights, TVs and
other appliances like PCs off when not being used (b) getting over your obsession with
absurdly large car engines and (c) getting even half a clue about how to insulate
buildings properly.

How well is your own home insulated ? Details please ? You might be able to save
yourself a small fortune. The payback time can be very quick.
