One figure I read is the plant needs about 200 hectares for only 50 MWe of power, how much does one hectare of surface typically cost?
200 hectares space for 50 MWe (25 W/m^2) sounds about right; similar to the 27 W/m^2 that was calculated above (6x6km for 1GWe).

Price of land in the desert is very cheap compared to the investment cost of the plant.

Even if I don' t consider the price of the land a real (at least economic) issue, I actually don't mean desert lands, but rather less populated area, for example, outside bigger cities; I suppose that desert sites is going to become too inefficient for electricity trasmission and thus costly

In Australia coal power plants are already in whoop whoop, so putting solar in the middle of nowhere is not going to require anything that hasn't already been done.
