I did the fatal mistake of using sockets for every one of them. The
cheap sockets, not the gold-plated ones. They are all pitch-black by
now (and have been so for years). I suspect this is part of the
reason (apart from the magic of my presence of course) that it took at
most one day until the computer steadfastly refused to do any work
whenever I lent it out to somebody else.

It is not unconceivable that your BIOS was written by me.
