I will just repeat what the previous posts say. The correct name is
'Sierpinski' (and he was Polish).
The surname 'Sierpinsky' doesn't exist in Polish. But many Polish emigrating
to USA have been replacing letter 'i' in their surnames to 'y' to sounds
more 'familiar' for native speakers :-). Hence, there are many Sierpinsky in
the States what may be a bit confusing. But the correct form is that with
'i' at the end as far as this great mathematician is consider..
To be perfectly true his surname should be written with
polish dialectal chars: "Sierpiński" (coded with charset="iso-8859-2")
