Howard Hughes built the "Spruce Goose". It flew exactly once and
never amounted to anything in the commercial marketplace.

Sony built betamax. It was a commercial failure.

Apple built the Apple III. It was a commercial failure.

People have been building fusion reactors for decades. Building them
and making them commercially viable are two vastly different things.

Just like Barnsley et al. were able to "build" fractal image
compression systems, the only significant use of that technology that
I can think of to date was an early version of the Encarta CD-ROM
encyclopedia from MS. However, even that switched to JPEG and other
commercially viable compression systems in a later version.
